In Italy for thirty years under the Borgias they had warfare, terror, murder and bloodshed but they produced Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci and the Renaissance. In Switzerland, they had brotherly love; they had five hundred years of democracy and peace and what did that produce? The cuckoo clock.
Orson Welles to Joseph Cotten in The Third Man, 1949

Winter in Italy, like Boston, has been a mixed bag of weather.  We have seen signs of Spring followed by several days of freezing cold, snow and rain.  Although, we are told, it is not usually this bad.
We are continuing to settle in here, taking day trips when we can and keeping busy with work.  Elisa's commute increased by several kilometers when the company moved to a larger building further inland.  She enjoys the work and the people and has reverted back to her Italian driving methods - which would put any Mass. driver to shame.
I have been working in Florence since late October and spend half my time there.  A typical week would involve taking a 7am train to Florence, via Bologna, arriving between 10 and 10:30 depending on the 90% chance of it being 'in ritardo'.  The return is usually 3 days later, getting home between 10:30 and 11:30pm, again at the mercy of 'il conduttore'.  Can anyone recommend any good books?  I've gone through quite a few. It is a good feeling though, despite all the train rides, to pass il duomo and cross ponte vecchio as part of my walk to work.
